Michael Amilcar

Chief Equity Officer

Afro-Latina, GenX, activist, storyteller

Michael has over 25 years of experience in the field of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA), where she has modeled the leadership values of equity, inclusion, integrity, and inspired vision to energize leaders in creating equitable, healthy and thriving workplace cultures for all. As owner and principal for Be Equitable she brings a tremendous level of experience in IDEA and is especially focused on systems level change, working closely with corporate C-suite teams, senior executives, and business leaders in (re)designing organizational systems that ensure equity from the start.  Michael has been a part of the organization's growth for the past 18 years and has previously held senior leadership roles at Diversity Best Practices (now Seramount), AXA Financial, NBC, and Magic Johnson Enterprises. Michael is a proud Afro Latina from Chicago's south side who now calls Houston, Texas home where she resides with her husband and two sons.

Who were your role models growing up? How do you think that’s impacted your life now?

Growing up I absolutely was inspired by the great many activist and progressive union organizers who were advocating for workers rights and fair and safe working conditions for employees.  This was Chicago in the 70s and 80s where I was surrounded by a diverse group of activists, leaders, and community organizers who were doing great work to ensure equity for all.  I can absolutely see how those early years shaped the values I hold today and why I have such a deep commitment to be in community with others to create a just and equitable world for all.

Cook Ross is now BE Equitable

These past few years have been incredibly tumultuous and evolving, where we have witnessed how complex and messy our world is.

In a world of tick-a-box trainings and quick fixes, we at Be Equitable are going after something more satisfying -- we’re here for the transformations. For the forward thinkers and future leaders who know the journey is long and are still ready, we see you and we want to partner with you.

Let’s go beyond the buzzwords to create workplaces that work for people of all races, ethnicities, identities, and abilities. It won’t be neat. And it certainly won’t be simple. Our BE team is ready and committed to get it done.

As we enter this next chapter of our story, we invite you to BE bold, BE inclusive, and BE authentic to the vision you have for yourself and your organization. And together we can create workplaces that are just and equitable for all.
